It is the process of physically counting and checking the condition of a business’s inventory at regular intervals. This is typically done at the end of the year for financial purposes but can also be carried out more frequently depending on the needs of the business. Inventory verification is also known as Stock taking. Inventory verification serves several purposes for businesses. It helps to:

• Ensure the accuracy of stock records by comparing physical counts with recorded inventory levels.
• Determine the value of the inventory on hand at the end of an accounting period, which is reflected in the closing stock.
• Provide accurate data for preparing the organization’s final financial accounts.
• Uncover any discrepancies in the inventory that could indicate fraud, theft, or losses.

Identify weaknesses in the storage and control procedures for inventory, allowing for improvements to be made.
